The Rise and Fall of Traditional MBA Programmes

Imagine walking towards a destination with full dedication and devotion. You would feel like you are on the right path, and soon you’re going to reach your goal. And then comes a superfast car, which zooms past you and there you’re, standing on the road, wondering whether it was a right decision to walk.

For many years, the traditional MBA enjoyed massive admiration and respect from students and businesses alike. Admissions were limited, and pay packages were huge. It was around the time when companies blindly hired management grads because they graduated from a well-known institute. The rise of the traditional MBA was massive. Long-story-short, everyone craved for this degree. And then came technology, which zoomed past the conventional MBA programmes.

Today, the very same MBA is facing severe criticism for failing to match the expectations of the industry. Traditional MBA in Lagos has been left walking on the roadside at the time when they could have easily adapted with the changing times and continued to remain a hiring standard for companies.

So, what went wrong?

Rise of Skill-Based Courses:

Traditional MBA programmes lack specialized courses to train students for the industry. Given the rapid advancements across various sectors, companies seek for job-ready employees. If an MBA programme fails to do so, then it isn’t worth your time and money.

The Tech Gap:

The technological disruption has impacted the higher-Ed in more ways than one. Artificial intelligence, big data and virtual reality have the potential to revolutionize the higher-ED. While some leading business schools in Lagos have embraced the emerging technologies and started courses on these technologies, a whole lot of traditional institutions still fail to evolve.
